Climate Action 101: Indonesia’s Guide for Newbies

The open-access publication, Climate Action 101: Indonesia’s Guide for Newbies, written by The Habibie Center (THC) and the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) Indonesia and published in September 2024, serves as an essential and accessible guide aimed at equipping young Indonesians to tackle the climate crisis. The book begins by simplifying complex concepts such as emissions, the greenhouse effect, and the meaning of ‘Net Zero’, emphasizing that the crisis poses urgent threats to Indonesia’s economy, biodiversity, and public health. Uniquely tailored to the Indonesian context, the guide highlights the dual challenge of pursuing ambitious climate action while balancing the country’s need for economic growth. Its core chapters detail sector-specific solutions, showing how to achieve Net Zero Emissions by decarbonizing critical areas such as electricity, transportation, waste, and the large forestry and land use (FOLU) sector, Indonesia’s biggest emission contributor. Finally, the book translates theory into practical action, encouraging readers to reflect on their carbon footprints, engage in local and systemic activism, pursue innovation, and seek “green jobs” to drive a sustainable and prosperous future for Indonesia
