A Sustainable Ecology Movement: Catholicism and Indigenous Religion United against Mining in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia

Deskripsi:
This article explores a sustainable ecology movement opposing manganese mining in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, since 2000. Uniting Catholicism and indigenous religion, the movement advocates for sustainability and a mining moratorium by engaging with the State and private sector. Using qualitative methods, including interviews and document analysis, the study finds that despite manganese’s low economic value, it remains significant for the region. It also highlights how religious and traditional institutions have strengthened community bonds and contributed to the discourse on extractivism and political ecology.
